In 1952, George Lerner of New York City invented and patented Mr. Potato Head based on an earlier toy called "make a face" that used a real potato. Lerner originally designed his all-plastic toy as a prize for cereal premiums. In 1953, Mr. Potato Head meets Mrs. Potato Head. The original concept of using actual fruits and vegetables was dropped in 1964 when Hasbro began supplying a plastic potato with each kit. Newly passed U.S. safety standards required that the prongs on the face pieces be less sharp. These revised pieces could not puncture real food.
